2 things:
a) the dying of the old man
b) the coming to life of the new man
This is by God’s Sovereign work alone through the saving instrumentality of the gift of grace & faith.
To die to self – is to be genuinely sorry for my sin, to hate it more and more & to run away from it.
To come to life – is to receive wholeheartedly with joy Christ Jesus, and to have a desire to do every kind of good work as God desires of me
Samuel Ward in his Sermons (pp.36 – 40) urges us to withdraw apart from all company to seek the Lord and the strengthening of our faith. How must we do this? By prayer, reading and meditation so that we can put strength and life into faith itself. We are to live by faith. Faith is to be active. A believer should go through the world as deep in thought shutting out all that would obstruct his purpose. He hears and sees nothing of the world which would hinder him. We must resolve in our hearts to not miss one day. We must redeem time – using 15 minutes or so here and there to listen to the Lord.
