Take Up & Read

December 19, 2019

As Augustine heard the words: “Tolle Lege” (Take up and read), let us do the same.

JC Ryle says: “He (or she) that desires to read the Bible with profit, must first ask the Lord Jesus to open the eyes of their understanding by the Holy Spirit. Human commentaries are useful in their way. The help of good and learned men is not to be despised. But there is no commentary to be compared with the teaching of Christ. A humble and prayerful spirit will find a thousand things in the Bible that the proud self-conceited student will utterly fail to discern.”

So – Tolle Lege!

Capacity & Command

February 14, 2017

Augustine points out in his work On the Spirit and the Letter, that “God does not measure the precepts of his law according to human powers, but where he has commanded what is right, he freely gives his elect the capacity to fulfill it.” (NPNF V. 83 – 114)

Augustine’s Principle of Providence

January 31, 2017

Augustine lays down a simple principle for providence. He says, “nothing is more absurd than that anything should happen without God’s ordaining it because it would then happen without a cause.” In other words, God is the cause alone of all things and he maintains all things.

The Distinctions in the Godhead

January 24, 2017

The Persons of the Godhead are a distinction and not a division. Augustine speaks clearly of the distinctions within the Godhead meaning as they belong to the Persons of the Trinity, when he says,

“Christ with respect to himself is called God; with respect to the Father, Son. Again, the Father with respect to himself is called God; with respect to the Son, Father. In so far as he is called Father with respect to the Son, he is not the Son; in so far as he is called the Son with respect to the Father, he is not the Father; in so far as he is called both Father with respect to himself, and Son with respect to himself, he is the same God.”

War Insanity

October 2, 2011

If we take away justice, what then are kingdoms, but great robberies? For what are robberies themselves, but little kingdoms? The band itself is made up of men; it is ruled by the authority of a prince, it is knit together by the pact of the confederacy; the booty is divided by the law agreed on. If, by the admittance of abandoned men, this evil increases to such a degree that it holds places, fixes abodes, takes possession of cities, and subdues peoples, it assumes the more plainly the name of a kingdom, because the reality is now manifestly conferred on it, not by the removal of covetousness, but by the addition of impunity. Indeed, that was an apt and true reply which was given to Alexander the Great by a pirate who had been seized. For when that king had asked the man what he meant by keeping hostile possession of the sea, he answered with bold pride, “What thou meanest by seizing the whole earth; but because I do it with a petty ship, I am called a robber, whilst thou who dost it with a great fleet art styled emperor.”

Augustine, City of God, Book IV, Chapter 4.
